Pittsburgh Minadeo is a PreK-5 neighborhood school nestled on a quiet residential street in Squirrel Hill. The school was named in memory of John Minadeo, a patrol boy at the former Gladstone School located on Hazelwood Avenue, who gave his life to help save others from a runaway car. To support our safe learning environment the Student Code Conduct is followed and supported by a strong School Wide Positive Behavior Intervention Program and Supports. Behavior Expectations are communicated through a framework called CHAMPS: Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, Participation, and Success. It is a proactive, positive, instructional approach to classroom management. We hold ourselves accountable for preparing all children to achieve academic excellence and strength of character, so they have the opportunity to succeed in all aspects of life.
There are several technology programs and two computer labs that provide another media for student learning. New to Minadeo this year is a program called eSPARK. Through eSPARK all students in grades 3-5 have their very own iPad. eSpark Learning uses iPad technology to provide students with closely monitored individualized learning. Using data from standardized test scores, eSpark diagnoses a student's individual learning needs. By creating personalized learning plans using highly interactive and academically rigorous apps and videos, eSpark provides an engaging and focused learning model.
All students in grades K-5 are scheduled for physical education art, and music. Students visit the library weekly for book circulation. The choral and instrumental music students prepare annual winter and spring concerts. A show choir also has performances throughout the city and the county.
There are many before, during, and after school programs that support academic achievement as well as development of the whole child. Our students can participate an annual talent show, and train for the Pittsburgh Kids Marathon. Minadeo has partnerships with community organizations such as Strong Women, Strong Girls, TRYPO, the Pittsburgh Chess Club, Duquesne University, and the Center of Life to provide additional opportunities for meeting the needs of a diverse student population.
